New Delhi: Shreyas Iyer, the Kolkata Knight Riders’ winning captain and Indian batsman, will not be able to play in the upcoming three-match ODI series against New Zealand due to an injury sustained while fielding against Australia in October. The BCCI has confirmed that while Shreyas Iyer appears to be recovering, it is difficult to say whether he will be fit enough to play a 50-over match.
Shreyas Iyer will not be available for the three-match ODI series starting January 11. The BCCI says that while he can bat, it is difficult for him to field for 50 overs, so the BCCI will not be able to include Shreyas Iyer in the team. According to a Times of India report, Shreyas Iyer has also lost up to 6 kg of weight due to the injury.
Several media reports also claim that if Shreyas Iyer’s health remains good, as planned, he could participate in the Vijay Hazare Trophy matches to be played in Mumbai on January 3rd and 6th.
However, the BCCI clearly stated that whether it’s the three ODI matches against New Zealand or the Vijay Hazare Trophy, his inclusion depends entirely on his health and whether he will be able to play for the full 50 overs or not.
BCCI said: “Shreyas Iyer has started skill training this week. He is in good shape. But we will have to assess his ability to field in a 50-over game before putting him back on the park. Depending on how he pulls up, his participation in the Vijay Hazare will be decided,”
Shreyas suffered from a serious injury while attempting to take a catch against Australia. Subsequent checks at a hospital in Australia revealed internal bleeding that required immediate hospitalization and intensive care. Shreyas underwent a minor surgical procedure to control the bleeding and was closely monitored by local medical specialists in Australia and India, including the Indian team doctor.
For Shreyas Iyer, 2025 proved to be a year of spectacular comeback, as he silenced his critics with both his batting prowess and leadership skills. Putting behind him the fitness issues and contract controversies of the previous year, Iyer firmly re-established his place in the Indian middle order. His mastery against spin bowling and improved technique against short balls made him a more mature batsman across all formats.
His aggressive performances as both captain and batsman in IPL 2025 solidified his T20 credentials, while his captaincy innings in the home Test series played a crucial role in India’s victories. Overall, 2025 saw Shreyas Iyer emerge as a more focused and mentally stronger player, appearing as a strong contender for future leadership roles in Team India.
